Art – Painting and Drawing for Wellbeing

Our Learning for Leisure courses are for people aged over 19 but we have some great courses for people aged 14 to 18, if you are interested in these please visit our website . If you are aged between 14 to 18 and are interested in this course please email 14-19study.programme@derbyshire.gov.uk.

Approximate course length: 5 weeks, 2 hours per week
This course is for:
The course will provide an opportunity to develop your painting and drawing skills and techniques. You will be given the support you require for your individual development. This course is for beginners and those with previous experience. Improve your wellbeing through creativity.
You will learn:
• Drawing and painting skills using different media such as watercolour, pastel, acrylic, pencil, pen and ink, mixed media
• Composition, preparation and planning for finished pieces
• Different elements of drawing and painting including tone, tint, shading, line, colour, texture, proportion, etc.
• To draw and paint a variety of different themes such landscape, still life, flower painting and portrait
• To research and develop techniques by studying well-known artists
• To experiment and appreciate the wellbeing benefits of being creative
This course will be delivered remotely via Microsoft Teams so you will be part of a live class, with a tutor, but with everyone doing the lessons at their own home.
There are no exams or formal assessments. There will be chance to ask questions and put what you have learned into practice. Your tutor will give you individual feedback during the course and you will be able to self-assess.
Work outside of the sessions:
This is not required, though we hope you will want to put what you have learned into practice. You may be given tasks or activities to prepare for sessions.
Additional costs and what to prepare:
You will need either a smart phone, tablet, laptop or other computer with internet access to do the course via a link you will be sent. You may also want to have a pen and paper, laptop or tablet so that you can make your own notes. Handouts may be provided.
You will be provided with a list of the materials and/or equipment you need for each course/ session.
Please wear old clothes or a shirt or apron as you may get messy. You may wish to have an art folder to store handouts, ideas, notes and work in progress.
Progression from this course:
You may wish to progress to the next block of 5 weeks, or perhaps come on one of our face courses or a seasonal one-day workshop such ‘Botanical Illustration – Spring Flowers in Watercolour’, or ‘Matisse Inspired Collage’. Discuss your next steps with your tutor or centre staff.

Course fees explained
Some of our courses are free of charge. Others have a full fee and a lower ‘concessions’ rate for those on certain benefits. This may vary from course to course so please ask when enquiring about a particular course. For many of our learning for leisure courses we use three different fee bands:
Fee A: Full fee
Fee B: Derbyshire Gold cards holders
Fee C: Concessions for those on certain benefits/allowances – details are on our Paying for your learning page.
There may be additional costs on some courses for materials please ask for details.
If selecting one of the reduced rates, you will be asked to show proof of entitlement when attending course.
Booking:
A booking fee is charged by Eventbrite for each booking, this is retained by Eventbrite. Derbyshire Adult Community Education Service receive the course fee.

Refunds:
If you are no longer able to attend a course, we may be able to refund the course cost up to 7 days before the course start date minus approximately 10% to cover costs incurred by us.
We reserve the right for refunds to be issued by cheque.
