Homeless Not Hopeless: Art as a Means of Overcoming Adversity

Saturday January 7, 2023 1 — 2:30
with Madeline LeBlanc
Online Zoom meeting
A talk will be led by Madeline LeBlanc on how she got her start as an artist while homeless as a teenager. Madeline explores how art may be utilised as a vehicle for social change to repair broken systems while examining issues of poverty, mental health, and art as a tool for self actualization.
As a self-taught artist from a low-income background, I have experienced firsthand the barriers faced by those marginalised in the art world. Through my work, I strive to create inclusive spaces for audience participation and highlight issues of accessibility in the industry. My artwork may appear lighthearted and fun, but beneath the surface lies important commentary on the dynamics of classism in the art world and the pressure put on artists and markets by art collectors.
