CLASS DESCRIPTION
In this talk Oxana Chvyakina will discuss notable female artists of the net art and Web3 epoch. Net art is an art movement of the late 1980s – early 2000’s. It includes a diverse selection of born-digital media such as websites, web viruses, mailing lists, online performances, media activism, etc. All these genres are united by the fact that they are created and distributed via the Internet. Internet attracted artists as a new space for creation and distribution because of its independence from any institutions and ability to communicate directly with the audience. With the development of blockchain technologies net-artists gained access to a wider audience and cryptocurrency market. What is the contribution that women have made to web-based art? During the lecture, we will examine representation of such female artists as VNS Matrix, Amalia Ulman, Eva Wohlgemuth, Olia Lialina, Petra Cortright, Christine Tamblyn, Elena Romenkona, Morehshin Allahyari, and others in web-based art and NFT. All together we will explore key themes and concepts of female net-artists in order to contemplate possibilities for greater inclusion in art history.
