Art Unlocked: Leighton House
Art Unlocked is an online event series brought to you by Art UK in collaboration with Bloomberg Philanthropies . Each week, different museum and gallery curators and directors from across the UK will deliver a 30-minute talk on selected works from their collection.
For our latest talk, join Art UK and Hannah Lund, Assistant Curator at Leighton House, for an exciting exploration of some notable works from this collection on 18th January 2023, 5:30pm. In this talk you will find out more about the life and career of eminent Victorian artist Frederic Leighton, through a virtual tour exploring six artworks from his extensive collection, ranging from colour and landscapes sketches, portraits, classical works and his final oil painting, Clytie which remains unfinished.
Art Unlocked is delivered over Zoom Webinar and can be accessed via the event page once you have registered. There will be a short Q&A session after the talk.
The talk is free but there is the option to donate to the Friends of Leighton House alongside your ticket. Any donations are much appreciated.
The Friends are a thriving membership community providing financial support to the museums in five key areas: acquisitions, learning programmes, exhibitions, conservation and restoration and major capital projects, such as Hidden Gem to National Treasure at Leighton House.
About Leighton House
Leighton House presents a unique collection of paintings, sculpture, drawings and ceramics, on display throughout the historic rooms. Frederic Leighton died in 1896 and his entire collection was sold at an auction by Christie’s, leaving the house as a virtual empty shell. It fell to Leighton’s near neighbour, Emilie Barrington and the Leighton House Committee, newly formed in 1897, to re-assemble a representative body of some of Leighton’s artworks as well as art pieces that he collected. These remain the core of the collections today and work is ongoing to retrieve items from his original collection.
